Made by Robert Black, this 2021 Shiraz/Grenache/Petit Verdot is an odd amalgam on paper but this direction was inspired by his many visits to the US and places like Paso Robles where young progressive winemakers were breaking the old rules and the results were exciting. The creation of different textures, structures, aromas and flavour profiles without compromising the basic measures of quality like strong colour, fruit clarity, generous flavour and ageworthiness. Components are predominantly sourced from Mudgee with Shiraz (90%) and Petit Verdot (2%) being grown locally. The Grenache (8%) originates from Eden Valley and is used for building mid-palate weight and juiciness. The Mudgee Shiraz provides the fine tannin structure that supports bottle age and the small amount of Petit Verdot a further layer of aromatic interest. The wine was matured in a mixture of both French and American oak hogheads for 15 months. This wine can be enjoyed immediately but expect a further improvement in balance over the next 6 months post bottling and then be confidently cellared for 7 â 10 years.
